Tuesday 11 August 2026 marks the next Australian Census, providing an important snapshot of our community.

The Census helps governments plan funding, services and infrastructure, including healthcare, housing, education and community programs. Importantly, Census data is also used by Council when applying for grants and advocating for funding on behalf of Gwydir Shire.

Every completed form strengthens our case. Every person counted helps demonstrate the true needs of our community and supports Council’s efforts to secure essential funding and services.

I encourage all residents to complete their Census form carefully and accurately.

Here’s what you need to know

From late July, most households will receive a letter containing a unique 16-digit Census number and temporary nine-character password to complete the Census online.

Some households will receive a paper form, which can be completed and returned using the Reply-Paid envelope provided.

Households that receive online instructions but would prefer a paper form will be able to request one online or through the 24-hour automated paper form request service. Details will be included in the Census materials delivered to your home.

If you have not received any Census information before Census night, please contact the Census Contact Centre on 1800 181 227 to arrange for materials to be sent.

Households and individuals may complete the Census as soon as they receive their materials, provided they know where they will be staying on Census night. Those who miss the date can still complete the Census online or return a paper form for approximately three weeks after Census night.

Anyone travelling within Australia on Census night will still need to complete a Census form. However, those who are overseas on 11 August are not required to participate.
